Active Lifestyle Trip to Bishopville, SC

Details: Join us for our Active Lifestyle trip as we head to Bishopville, South Carolina. Our first stop is a Dutch treat lunch at Harry and Harry Two, a popular lunch spot amongst the locals. After lunch we are heading to the Cotton and Veterans Museums. Our tour will include a look back on how cotton was transported before trucks and roads and a glance at one of the classic spinning machines. The Veterans’ Museum was designed, built, and furnished by Veterans of Lee County. From the Fallen Soldier to the history of the Wars and Conflicts, the museum holds a place for Lee County Veterans. After the tour of the Cotton and Veterans’ Museum we will swing by to take a look at Pearl Fryer’s Topiary Garden. Visitors to the Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden experience a place that is alternately beautiful, whimsical, educational, and inspiring. Pearl’s garden contains over 300 individual plants and few are spared from his skilled trimming. Sundays at Lowman Concert Series featuring Sarah Masterson, piano

Join us for an afternoon of music featuring Sarah Masterson on the piano. Dr. Sarah Masterson received a B.A. in physics and a Performer’s Certificate from DePauw University, and a M.M. and D.M.A. in piano performance from the University of Connecticut. Her recent research involves the work of twentieth-century American women composers, and her doctoral research focused on the use of sonata form in mid-twentieth-century American piano sonatas.  As a collaborative pianist, she has worked with the UConn Wind Ensemble and performed at the UConn Chamber Music Festival.   She recently presented lecture-recitals on Florence Price at the 2015 Women Composers Festival of Hartford and the 2016 Mid-Atlantic CMS Conference.  Before joining the Newberry College faculty, Dr. Masterson previously taught at Eastern Connecticut State University and Fitchburg State University.

All Sunday at Lowman Concerts are held at 3:00 pm on Sunday afternoons in the New Life Chapel located in the Wellness Center on the Heritage at Lowman campus. Join us for an afternoon of music featuring the Duo 2: Peter Bloom, flute & Mary Jane Rupert, piano and harp. Peter H. Bloom, flute, concertizes in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand; appears on 40 recordings; and is a winner of the American Musicological Society’s Noah Greenberg Award. He has given lectures and master classes across the globe and has served as historical performance consultant to The American Museum in Britain, The New-York Historical Society, and Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts, where he performs and lectures regularly. Mary Jane Rupert, piano and harp, praised by the New York Times as exhibiting “indeed real sensitivity,” has performed throughout the world from Carnegie Recital Hall to the Beijing Concert Hall. She has appeared as concert pianist and harpist with chamber ensembles, choral groups and orchestras across the United States.

February Book Club: A Passage Back by Chuck Walsh

Join us for the February book club as we read and discuss, A Passage Back, by author Chuck Walsh. To join us please read the book by our book club meeting. During book club we discuss the characters, themes, and questions you have about the book. We are excited to announce that author Chuck Walsh will be here to facilitate the discussion.

About the book:  Chase Watson is frustrated with life and the fact that middle age has hit him right between the eyes. Most importantly, he’s overwhelmed by the loss of his mother. Distraught after her funeral, he drives to the Little League ball field in the neighborhood he grew up, looking for solace. It’s the one place that symbolized youth, happiness, and care free times. A freak accident renders him unconscious, and when he awakens, he is stunned to see his mother kneeling over him.

Dementia Dialogues

Dementia Dialogues is a basic training course designed to educate individuals who care for persons with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias. This program, presented by Dr. Macie Smith, is provided at no cost to participants through the University of South Carolina’s Arnold School of Public Health, Office for the Study of Aging, and through funding from the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. There are five sessions which will include: The Basic Facts, Keeping the Dialogue Going, Preparing the Environment, It’s Nothing Personal, and Now What Do I Do. Registration starts at 7:45am. Join us for our favorite Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner and Mardi Gras celebration! Shrove Tuesday Pancake dinner will include a buffet of pancakes, bacon, sausage, fruit, eggs, grits, biscuits, and gravy. After you are full from dinner head to the Hoefler Gallery for our Mardi Gras party! The party will feature the Carl Payne Orchestra. The Carl Payne Big Band delivers an authentic, polished jazz sound. Formerly Blythewood Jazz Orchestra, the Carl Payne Big Band specializes in music from the Big Band Swing Era, with a bit of contemporary Rhythm and Blues. The band members include band directors, teachers, engineers, lawyers, law enforcement, TV producer, college and high school students. The goal is to preserve the music of the Big Band Swing Era and educate not only the listening public, but young aspiring musicians.

Quiet Communion Service

This service is planned to meet the needs of many within our Heritage at Lowman Community. While the service is less formal than a Sunday morning service, it incorporates the main parts of the liturgy with Holy Communion as the central point of the service. There is both a scripture reading as well as a short devotion/Homily in the content of the service. Over the next few months the theme for the devotions will be “And Now You Know the Rest of the Story”. Finally, a special litany will be used within the service to remember those who have passed on to the Church Triumphant.
