Join us as we head back to school at Newberry College. For our first trip on March 1st we will get to hear Newberry Archivist, Tracy Powers, discuss a program on their completed archives that are not yet open to the public. Then on March 15th we will sit in with Professor Krista Hughes to ponder “The Examined Life”. For both presentations come prepared to take notes and learn. University of South Carolina Computer Classes

During the kickoff, students from Carolina will be giving you a brief synopsis of the topics you will be learning about during the weekly computer classes. Heritage University: National Geographic 125 Years

Join us as we delve into 125 years of National Geographic discoveries that have changed the world. From the peak of Mt. Everest to isolated communities within North Korea, National Geographic has captured places and events that few have ever witnessed and documented. Come see the power of the human spirit push beyond boundaries to explore new frontiers. Each week will showcase a different episode. In March we will discover the search for the Afghan girl, the secrets of the Titanic, Americans on Everest, and Holland against the Sea. History of the US Flags

Active Lifestyle Trip: Riverbanks Zoo and Garden

Lions and tiger and bears, oh my! Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is home to more than 2,000 magnificent and fascinating animals and one of the nation’s most beautiful and inspiring botanical gardens. The lush 170-acre site features dynamic natural habitat exhibits, scenic river views, spectacular valley overlooks, and significant historic landmarks. The newest residents of our local zoo are the sea lions and grizzly bears. During our trip you will have free roam to explore the zoo at your own pace and leisure. International Day: Italy

March Book Club: The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry by Rachel Joyce

About the book: Meet Harold Fry, recently retired. He lives in a small English village with his wife, Maureen, who seems irritated by almost everything he does. Little differentiates one day from the next. Then one morning a letter arrives for Harold from women he hasn’t heard from in 20 years, Queenie Wallace, who is in Hospice and writing to say goodbye. Therapy Education Series: Eating for a Sharper Mind

 BeWell Walking Club: Riverfront Park

Let’s get outside for a walk! We will be heading downtown to enjoy a walk at Riverfront Park. This walking path runs along the Broad River. There are plenty of benches along the path for you to stop and take a break and take in the spectacular scenery. You will get an hour to walk. In that time you walk at your own pace. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes to walk. You may also want to bring a hat, sunglasses, and a water bottle. Sundays at Lowman Concert Series: Alan Weinberg, piano & Ashley Horvat, violin

Join us for an afternoon of music featuring Alan Weinberg of the piano and Ashley Horvat on the violin.  Alan Weinberg, Professor of Music at Columbia College, Columbia, South Carolina, is a native of Philadelphia where he earned his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from Temple University. In 1984 he received his Doctor of Music degree in performance from Indiana University, graduating with distinction. In addition to his activities as a performer, Dr. Weinberg is also a composer. His works include Celebration Fanfare for wind ensemble, and compositions for dance. His Salsa Suite for flute and piano has been performed in international festivals in Peru, New Zealand, and Germany and is published by ALRY Publications. It has been recorded by German flutist Christiane Meininger and her group Baroque and Blue for their CD entitled
Silver Poetry and is available on iTunes. In July, 2010, Dr. Weinberg was the recipient of a grant from the American Embassy in Berlin to attend the world premiere in Dresden of his new composition, Americana Suite, for Meininger and her ensemble, which will be released on CD in 2014.

A native of Columbia, South Carolina, Ashley Horvat began studying violin at age three. Mrs. Horvat holds a Master’s degree in Violin Performance from the University of Akron, a Bachelor’s degree in violin performance from the North Carolina School of the Arts, and a high school diploma with a focus on violin performance from the North Carolina School of the Arts. Mrs. Horvat is the adjunct violin and viola teacher at Columbia College and the Palmetto Center for the Arts. She also maintains a very exclusive private studio at her home. She is a very active solo and chamber musician and gives frequent recitals, masterclasses, and guest appearances throughout the year. When she is not busy with her music, she loves photography, gardening, animals, cooking, and spending time with her husband, Damir and two children Daphne and Donovan.

All Sunday at Lowman Concerts are held at 3:00 pm on Sunday afternoons in the New Life Chapel located in the Wellness Center on the Heritage at Lowman campus and will be followed by a reception in the adjacent Hoefler Gallery.
